More Fair

L.A. County Fair 2010

i worked at the la county fair a few days outta the week for the month of september. it was a lot more laid back and paid better. and now it's gone. met some awesome artists from san diego and they helped me come up with some ideas.

Alfred E. Newman

i thought this guy looked a lot like the mascot from mad magazine. he had a habit of raising his shoulders up to his ears i guess out of glee? his mother was kept telling him to stop that but i tried to ewxplain it was good for character in the cartoon. even kept him from doing it in the photo which would have been nice for the comparison. o well. she seemed nice maybe too nice. had two prior caricatures of her son from baby and a few years ago. mine was the third and reminded me i'm not doing so bad with the competition out there.

Odd Couple

i couldn't tell if this was a couple or a grandfather/granddaughter. she kept calling him honey tho. i just assumed it was an anna nicole situation and went with it. they seemed very nice.

Mermaid

the mother of this cutie pie was kind enough to send me this photo of her daughter since she wasn't feelin smiley at the time. i told her i'd make her famous on my blog and finally i have fulfilled my end of the bargain. thanks so much!

Crazy Guy

this man muttered a lot and i couldn't understand a word he was saying. his delivery sounded like jokes so i laughed.

Cheshire Kid

so the portrait stand closed down because no-one wants to buy a portrait at downtown disney. no love of fine art in the disneyland crowd? what a shock. so kaman's finally opened a caricature stand at disney and i was thrown on board. kaman's is a terrible corporation to work for. just another monster sucking the depleting blood of today's young, penniless artists. two caricature jobs i had before this paid me 30% and 25% of my sales. kaman's, being the biggest company of the three, pays me a whopping 16%. not to mention they have an uptight rule for every uptight rule. on the lighter side of things, this quirky little boy asked me to draw him as the cheshire cat. being a big alice fan and having never before received such a genius request, i seized the opportunity with gusto and was pleased with the outcome. the end

Roger Waters

bassist and integral writer throughout pink floyd's heyday. many have said he's a dick. i love the atmospheres he created in the songs. brilliant at making massive sounds with simple yet unique song writing skills. i think he added that tension in pink floyd's music because if you listen to their later albums without him, though some beautiful moments, they don't seem to carry the same weight. also a fantastic lyricist. ugly bugger. he's got that kind of ugly that doesn't look normal until he's aged into an old man.

Syd Barrett

the founder of pink floyd. he wrote a lot of koooky songs and inspired a lot of people. went crazy before super stardom. a perfect example of that friend that shines so brightly and suddenly disappears into obscurity. the tragedy of youth lost, the promises of a new day never realized. my favorite of his, jug band blues.

Jim Morrison

this is jim. jim is him. from this photo i could see how they would cast val kilmer as a good look alike. but from other photos ive seen of him, his face looks less sharp edged, rounder. his ears stuck out too and his jaw seemed to jut out. plus he had that weird brow to nose plate that seemed to encase his eyes. actually, he bears a strong resemblance to a guy i grew up with named william hammons. i think their of the same descent. no joke, he has the same eyes, ears, head shape, and that puckered lip thing. not to mention, he had the same love of poetry and dramatics. a lot less serious though.

Joey Diablo

this is the cartoon i worked on for several months. it was for this guy who wanted me and some friends to animate a cartoon based on his childhood. i did the character design and key frames. not a cartoon that i personally would have made, but the money helped.

more practice

quick sketch portraits are hard. you dont really have a chance to make measurements. you have to eyeball everything.

little girl practice

i went my whole shift without selling a portrait that day because of the geniuses at disney that had our stand moved to no mans land. towards the end, and against co. policy, i decided to draw from a photo to get some practice in. i really wanted to draw this day so i went for it. decent.

another sold demo

i was trying to draw her profile for a demo and she was busy texting. i said fuck it and drew her looking down. once finished, we were all happy with the result and her boyfriend bought it.

big flippin star

freaky revelation

check this out! the top drawing is an airbrushed caricature i did at universal studios a few years back. the bottom is of a completely different kid i did recently as a portrait in pastel chalk. it might as well be the same kid. as you can imagine, i was pleasantly surprised when i caught this. dig.

profile of duder

i started doing portraits at downtown disney in march. this one's about two months into the job. im trying to do away with my cartoon tendencies.
we use pencil and pastel chalk.
